My Mac hard drive suddenly stopped mounting, and I need to recover important files, photos, and documents from it. I’m looking for safe Mac hard drive data recovery options before I accidentally make things worse.
Stop using the drive first. Seriously, that matters more than anything else right now.
Deleted or missing files usually are not wiped instantly. In a lot of cases, macOS has only marked that space as free, which means the data may still be there until something new gets written over it. So don’t download anything, don’t install recovery tools onto that same drive, and don’t keep poking around more than necessary. If it’s an external drive, unplug it for now. If it’s the Mac’s internal drive, keep activity to an absolute minimum.
Before getting into recovery software, check the simple stuff. Look in the Trash first. Also, if the files were on an external drive, remember that external drives can have their own hidden trash folder. Open the drive in Finder, press Shift + Command + . to show hidden files, and look for a folder named .Trashes. Sometimes the files are sitting there and can be restored with “Put Back.”
If you use Time Machine, try that next. Open Time Machine from the menu bar, go back to a point where the files still existed, select what you need, and restore them. That’s usually the cleanest fix if you have a backup.
If there’s no backup and the files are not in Trash, then recovery software is probably the next realistic step before paying for a lab. Disk Drill is a good option on Mac because it’s pretty straightforward and works well with APFS and HFS+ drives.
The useful thing about tools like that is they don’t only search for filenames. They can scan for file signatures, so even if the directory info is messed up, they may still find JPGs, documents, videos, and other file types based on the data itself. If the drive seems flaky, like it mounts sometimes, runs slowly, or disconnects randomly, use the Byte-to-Byte Backup feature first. Make an image of the drive, then scan the image instead of hammering the physical drive over and over.
One important SSD caveat: if this is an internal SSD in a modern Mac, don’t wait around. TRIM can make deleted data much harder to recover because the drive may clear that space in the background. Recovery from SSDs is usually less forgiving than recovery from older spinning hard drives.
If the drive is clicking, grinding, buzzing, or making weird mechanical noises, stop trying software. Unplug it. That’s a physical failure situation, and running scans can make it worse. At that point, a professional recovery service is the safer route, even though it can get expensive.
Once you get through this, set up Time Machine and add a cloud backup too. But for now, the main thing is: don’t write anything else to the drive, check the easy recovery spots, and if needed, scan it carefully with a proper recovery tool. There’s still a decent chance the files are recoverable if they haven’t been overwritten.
Don’t try to “fix” the disk before you’ve copied data off it. That includes clicking Initialize when macOS offers it, reformatting it, repartitioning it, or running random repair commands because they sound harmless. Disk Utility First Aid is fine for some normal filesystem issues, but if the drive is failing or the file system is badly damaged, repairs can change the structure you’re trying to recover from.
If the drive is visible in Disk Utility but won’t mount in Finder, that’s a better sign than a totally dead drive. Check whether it shows the correct size. If it shows the right capacity, try recovery from another Mac if possible, and save recovered files to a different drive, never back onto the problem disk. Disk Drill or similar tools can be useful here, but the important part is the workflow: scan the bad drive, recover to a healthy drive. If the drive keeps disconnecting, clone/image it first and work from that image.
A detail people forget with Macs is encryption. If this was an APFS/FileVault volume, the recovery tool may need the Mac login password or recovery key to see anything meaningful. Without that, you may only see a locked container or useless-looking data. So yes, recovery is possible in many cases, but don’t turn a recoverable file system problem into a wiped drive by accepting macOS prompts too quickly.
Don’t keep rebooting the Mac over and over hoping it suddenly behaves, especially if this is the internal drive. Each boot can write logs, caches, Spotlight stuff, and other junk to the same disk you’re trying to preserve. If you have access to another Mac, I’d treat the bad drive as a source only: connect it externally, or use Target Disk Mode/Share Disk if the Mac supports it, then copy the most important folders first before running long scans. Recovery apps like Disk Drill can help if the volume structure is damaged, but I’d avoid starting with a full deep scan if the drive is unstable. Grab the irreplaceable stuff first if it appears even briefly, then worry about the rest.
A drive that won’t mount is still recoverable sometimes, but the odds depend less on macOS and more on whether the hardware is actually readable. “Not mounting” can mean a few different things: the file system is damaged, the partition map is messed up, the enclosure/cable is bad, or the drive itself is dying.
Before you spend hours scanning it, I’d separate the Mac problem from the drive problem. If it’s an external drive, try a different cable, a different port, and no hub or dock. For 3.5-inch desktop drives, make sure the power adapter is correct. If it’s a bare SATA drive in an enclosure, the enclosure can be the failure point, not the disk. Swapping to another known-good enclosure or USB-to-SATA adapter is a cheap test, as long as you are not repeatedly forcing a failing drive to spin up.
I agree with the warnings above about not writing to the disk. I’d be even more conservative with Disk Utility than most people are. Looking at the drive in Disk Utility is fine. Running First Aid is something I would only do after you have either copied off the important files or made an image/clone. First Aid can fix minor directory problems, but “fix” sometimes means changing metadata, and that is not what you want before recovery.
If the drive appears with the right size, that’s usually the point where software recovery makes sense. Disk Drill is one option, and the useful feature in this situation is imaging the disk first, then scanning the image. The annoying part is you need another drive with enough free space for the image plus somewhere to save recovered files. People forget that and then end up trying to recover files back onto the damaged drive, which is exactly what you do not want.
If the drive does not show up at all in Disk Utility, System Information, or another Mac, software probably will not help. Same if it clicks, spins down, gets very hot, or disconnects every time you touch it. At that stage the choice is basically professional lab or accept the loss. If the files are truly important, stop before “one more try” turns a recoverable case into a worse one.
