Is there a legit way to try ChatGPT Plus for free?

I want to use some of the advanced features in ChatGPT Plus but can’t afford the subscription right now. Has anyone found any real methods to access these features for free? I’m hoping there’s a free trial or another way to try it out before paying.

Short answer: No legit way for free, sadly. OpenAI doesn’t do free trials for ChatGPT Plus (as of June 2024, anyway), so any site or YouTube vid promising free access is usually clickbait or a scam. Sometimes they have promos or temporary giveaways, but those are rare and usually pretty limited (if they pop up, they’re announced on OpenAI’s official channels). You can always use the free GPT-3.5 tier, and there are a few alternatives that offer more generous free tiers (like Perplexity AI or Poe, with limited access to GPT-4-level models). But the full Plus features? If you see something offering those for free, be careful – you might just be signing up to steal your info instead.

Honestly, I kinda wish there was a magic loophole here, but in my experience, no—unless OpenAI holds a surprise promo, you’re basically outta luck. Sonhadordobosque hit the nail on the head about the scams; if you see any “ChatGPT Plus for Free!” links outside OpenAI’s site, run (unless you LIKE viruses). But, hey, I actually emailed support once asking about free trials and they just sent me a polite “nope,” so that’s a dead end too.

I do want to add, though: while GPT-3.5 is more limited, I’ve had luck getting away with most tasks if I break ‘em down or just refresh a bit. Not ideal, but it’s workable. For features like web browsing or advanced data analysis (the “Plus perks” everyone wants), there’s just no real substitute unless you pay up. AI alternatives like Claude or Bing’s Copilot occasionally open up experimental features for free, but they have their own quirks and limits. Some universities or workplaces offer discounted or even free access to Plus as part of partnerships/trials, so maybe look into that if it applies (tiny chance, but hey!).

Anyone in the same boat find a clever workaround? Or do we just bite the bullet and accept the free tier? Not sure why OpenAI doesn’t do more short free trials, especially since that’d probably hook a lot of users like us. Feels like a missed opportunity tbh.
